I am on this epic ~quest~ to listen to my ipod A-Z. I got to Bob Dylan before Itunes 10 decided to crash and delete all my playlists. Awesome. So I downgraded to Itunes 9.2.1 and started listening to it all over again. I figure I'd use the deletion of my playlists to really start this project fresh.

As of right now I have 6758 songs (this is after I went through and deleted about 2500 songs a few months ago) and I have no goal for deletion, but I do want to stop having to skip albums when I have my ipod on shuffle. Then I want to get some fresh music to enjoy.

In other news: I really don't want to write the paper that is due on Wednesday. I read all the articles and wanted to gouge myself a few times in the middle and now I have to write a cohesive paper about the shenanigans I had to read about.

Sadly what I really want to do is read all the books on urban history and the French East India company. You can't make me choose my own topic and then expect me to be enthused about the economic history or books I've already read before. It's useless.

So I'm going to go write this paper right now (using my awesome notes) and turn in a draft. Keep calm, study on.

So much stuff has gone down that I don't even know where to begin so I will start from the earliest news and work my way to the present.
  • I already talked about my thesis presentation so I won't rehash that except to say that professors stopped me to tell me mine was the best etc and that they can't wait to see how it turns out. Which pleases me to no end. I don't need to be the best, but it is a relief to me that all  my hard work paid off and that people were receptive to it and excited for it. This makes me more motivated to get it going because I know that it's something new and interesting to a lot of different historians.
  • I heard from my summer internship before I presented my paper but did not get around to talking about/dealing with it until this week because I was so busy. I've officially got a job for this summer at the same place and I start June 7th.

CHUCK P!!!!!! )
  •  Then I didn't sleep for two days while I finished and turned in my paper. And found out I got an A on it and in the class and I could have wept with relief because I threw myself into this class.
  • I got a B in the other class which was less work and I still don't know how that worked out when I turned everything in on time and am still fucking dicking with copyright people. Seriously. STILL EMAILING THESE TWATS POST-SEMESTER. That's totally a B. I would be more irritated about this if I cared but I don't. I just care about it affecting my GPA. Obnoxious but ditching this bs to do my Thesis instead was the best idea ever because this class wasn't even something I wanted to do. The end.
  • I went to a going away party for my friend that is moving to texas and getting married and since I hadn't eaten for two days I got super drunk off of one drink , ate and then drank three more and everything was amaaazing. I needed that after this ridiculously stressful semester.
  • JONATHAN RICHMAN. I finally got to see him live. He's ridiculous and I laughed a lot and it was totally worth dealing with all the people bitching about the small space and hitting me with their obnoxiously huge bag.
  • I am basically still exhausted from this semester and am sucking at being a real person so I am just reading Crime and Punishment. The end

The good news is that I am done with my thesis presentation speech and powerpoint slide show. The bad news is that I have to give the speech now.

In other news I was randomly googling to see if Jonathan Richman was going on tour soon and I found out that he is going to be in Long Beach for three days next week so I bought a ticket ($10!!!) to see him the day after I turn my paper in.  KISMET.

ALSO. Russia and Canada are totally killing it in Worlds. APPROVED.
05 May 2010 @ 01:54 pm

I got my guitar calluses back! Finally. Now I can practice longer and do more stuff again. Why did I stop playing for years again?

Oh well. Now I can finish re-learning Stairway to Heaven and Tchaikovsky and learn Fleet Foxes songs and play Bad Romance too much. THE END.
Also! I was able to catch up on homework and am done with an entire class (the one that will lead to my name in a published book!) so I have been going through the music on my computer. I have currently deleted 1600+ songs and counting so I will be doing that music post I promised soon.

Earlier today I proclaimed it "Listen to all the Beatles albums in the order they were made" day.  I started with the songs they did with Tony Sheridan and am currently on Rubber Soul. So I've gotten through seven albums so far. I have eight more albums to get through because I seriously own too many Beatles albums. I even have the unreleased bootleg albums with all their demos and bsides on them.

The number one reason I have a twitter: Talking to Brian Schechter. Right now we are talking about how he is going to catch AIDS from being too close to Trace Cyrus and I recommended cheesecake as a decontamination option. [ profile] momebie is a terrible influence on my life because normally Schechter and I just talk about food. What is this.

Speaking of food the veggie Hawaiian burger at Islands is very delicious. Except the teriyaki sauce made it really ridiculously hard to keep the burger from flinging random pieces of lettuce at me so I just ate the lettuce and then the burger. Problem solved.

Other than shenanigans I am working on final paper assignments and working on getting copyright information and prices for art that is going in to a book (I am technically going to be a published historian when this gets printed). Then I have to write blurbs about the artists and the paintings by thursday and then I will be done with that class.

I also have to work on my prospectus presentation powerpoint and speech and I do not want to do this because I do not want to speak in front of a group of people I know. THE END.

Back to homework now.

I got an email back from one of my professors about my thesis prospectus and she gave me the thumbs up for the project (apart from some notes to keep in mind. Which were actually really helpful so I can't complain. She also complimented my writing by telling me it's improved greatly since last semester. That was a confidence boost and a relief. Now I just need to wait until the other two send me emails, but one is in India so it may be a while...

Today RUSH announced their summer tour and they are going to be here on right around my birthday. Neil Peart!  It's weird because when my step dad and I were talking on the way to the Cheap Trick concert in February we were talking about what bands we really wanted to see and my dream list was Rush and Tom Petty and then they both announced summer tours. Keep reading my mind and giving me gold like this, internet.

I started writing this post thinking I had all this amaaaaaaazing stuff to talk about but apparently I don't. I just have more homework. After this week my homework is going to calm down because I pretty much have five things to turn in all at once and then normal homework routines will start again.

Also the Avs vs Blackhawks game is tomorrow so twitter spamming will probably be happening. Which I am sure no one is excited about so consider this a warning.

Ok back to homework and freaking out.

[ profile] seratonation  gave me history vs science, books, the spanish inquisition, music stereotypes aaaand steampunk

1. History vs Science. I used to be a chemistry major but decided that having to do hardcore math all the time wasn't going to make me happy so I switched to history. LIKE A BOSS. I am still obsessed with science (in case you haven't been watching my tumblr) and still read science journals and articles when I have time.

I actually bring it up in class sometimes and freak everyone out that I can quote Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and Oppenheimer and understand string theory on an abstract level and shit. I am like come on guys history should be INTERDISCIPLINARY. Hahaha I am such an asshole. Whatever. They don't even know about Clifford Geertz's thick description anthropology method so haters to the left.

2. Books. I looooooooooove books. Oh man. Except that for some reason the majority of books I have to read for my history classes SUCK SO HARD. I get so distracted by major organizational errors and stuff and I often complain in class about how if I wrote any of this book and turned it in as an essay my professors would tear it to shreds. Also I thinkthat if this shit AND stephanie myers gets published then when I write my own history books I better get it published or I am going to bring all these books to the publisher and be like "YOU PUBLISHED THIS SHIT. WHOSE RESPONSIBLE THIS?"

Also I really really really really am looking at all these Russian philosophy and literature books and Bukowski's work with big doe eyes going "I CAN READ NAO?" as I work on my prospectus. It's kind of pathetic. Also I am like cooing at my Kafka books in sadness. I am such a fucking nerd.

3. The Spanish Inquisition: NOOOOOOOOOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION! Actually I don't particularly do or have an interest in Spanish  OR religious history so I kind of just know the basics about the inquisition. I probably know more about the Reconquista than it. Awesome. THE MOORS!

4.Music stereotypes? What do you mean by this? Like slutty pop girls and dirty metal heads or what? I feel that if you listen to enough music that you wouldn't feel the need to prove yourself in a certain niche using certain behavior or clothing because your life isn't just dependent on that one thing. I detest any kind of people who are like I just listen to this so I wear this and go to these kind of bars and have these kinds of friends.

Really? You can't live your own life? You have to turn it into a formula? Why? Because you are scared? Fuck that. Sartre believes that you define yourself as a person by what actions you take. So if you aren't doing what you want because you want to fit in then you have started defining yourself by other people's interesta and behavior and you are just a shell of a person.

5. Steampunk. I was into steampunk before I actually knew the term because a good majority of the literature that I like to read is 19th century and it's often science fiction or horror or mystery so it fits neatly into steampunkdom because of the alternate possibilities it offers in the text. I also have always loved anachronistic and retro music so now hearing bands SPECIFICALLY making anachronistic music thanks to the growth of steampunk is amaaaaaaazing.

The US lost to Canada in Hockey and I want to kick Crosby in the throat. I mean I wanted to before but now I can say it's for ~America~. Hahahaha. Oh, nationalism. Your face.

The closing olympic ceremony gave me the ultra motts and made me weep. They kept mentioning the Georgian luger and showing his hometown mourning him, guys. How do you resist tears for that? They pinged all my weeping points (death and Eastern Europe?).

Then I went and watched the rest of it with my grandma and she couldn't stop making fun of the olympic tourch so any emotional moments were lost after that. I am not kidding you. "This is the ugliest olympic flame set up ever. Why are they like that?" I thought it was a rhetorical question but she was legitimately asking me about the history of the 2010 Winter Olympics' Torch so I responded by just laughing insanely into a pillow as she kept reiterating how ugly it was. And also she kept falling asleep and snoring, which she refuses to admit that she does, and waking herself up with her snoring so I had to leave before I woke her up with giggling.

Then they passed the metaphorical torch to Sochi, Russia and they had ballet and Tchaikovsky and Ovechkin and the Moscow Symphony Orchestera. AND I LOST MY SHIT AGAIN OVER RUSSIA HAVNG THE NEXT WINTER GAMES!!!! NOW NOBODY CAN QUESTION ME ROOTING FOR THEM IN HOCKEY  BECAUSE IT'S HOME TEAM SUPPORT. BITCHES. *FIST PUMP* Go Russia! (Even if Putin is spooky and kind of threatened the Russian teams for not winning enough medals. Cause he's a fucking creeper).

Then William Shatner came on and made the whole entire evening creepy. Thanks, Shatner. I love you as Kirk but you never could get through an episode without giving me the motts at least once and you just upped the creep factor the the closing ceremony tenfold with your speech.

First! I finished a scarf:

Second! I made a Donatello brooch!

It's kind of creepy that I have the exact ninja turtle colors in felt just sitting around my room. The purple is less washed out than it looks here. Note of interest: Apparently my grandmother remembers the ninja turtles so me showing her these didn't end in an awkwardly hilarious conversation with me trying to explain how a bunch of turtles and a rat got splashed by radioactive waste and turned into full grown men sized animals who lived in a sewer, ate pizza and were ninjas.

Also! I received my prize from that awkward PATD Thanksgiving Contest! The Lying is the Most Fun.... single vinyl. That's randomly square so it's useless like an owl!

11 November 2009 @ 09:18 pm
Every year starting at the end of November I go through a month of music mourning because the two most important musicians in my life died in these months. Freddy Mercury on November 24th of 1991 and Joe Strummer on December 22nd 2002.

When I was younger I was fortunate enough to be raised on Queen. My mom and I listened to Queen's cassette tapes until they wore out. We would BLAST Bohemian Rhapsody in the car and completely bonded with Wayne and Garth over the driving scene because that's just what you did with Queen's music. You just let go enjoyed life in those moments. Their music makes you feel free and loved. And that is their gift to us.

When Freddy Mercury died I was six and I was completely crushed. It was like a light in the world went out and would never be seen or felt again. My view of the world changed and a little piece of me died with him.

The next time this happened George Harrison died. Then Michael Hutchence, Dusty Springfield, Bradley Nowell, John Denver, Joey Ramone, John Lee Hooker, Layne Stayley, JOHN ENTWISTLE.

Then came the next biggest heartbreak. In December of 2002 Joe Strummer died. Like Queen, I've listened to the Clash since I was super young but it wasn't until I was older that I realized the significance of what they did politically. From then to now Joe Strummer has been the biggest hero in my life. From his politics to his radio shows to his lyrics to everything I read and hear about him. His attachment and love of music is the biggest factor in why I like him so much. Just listen to one of his radio shows from the BBC or watch an interview. Actually all the guys from the Clash are pretty epic people but I have always felt the most kin ship with Joe and when he died I was a mess. It was Christmas and I felt completely alone. More so than normal.

After Joe Strummer died we lost Johnny Cash and Warren Zevon the next year. And then Syd Barrett died and then Richard Wright and I completely lost my shit again because PINK FLOYD.

So! Every year to celebrate the life and music of two of the most important people to me I hardcore listen to Queen and The Clash from the end of November to the end of December. I listen to them and I cry for our loss and I remember them for their life and their music. And I love them for what they mean to my life.

How many songs total: 9234
How many hours or days of music: 24 days
Most recently played: The Plasmatics "You're a Zombie"
Most played:Sigur Rós – Ágætis byrjun (50).
Most recently added: Mika "We are golden."

Sort by song title:
First song: "A-Punk" by Vampire Weekend.

Sort by album:
First album: A-Haunting We Will Go-Go by The Ghastly Ones
Last album: 80-85 by Bad Religion

First song that comes up on Shuffle: Girl Worth Fighting For (Italian) from Mulan

Search the following and state how many songs come up:
Death: 121. This is because I have Death Cab for Cutie and Death from Above 1979 albums up the butt on my itunes.
Life: 152. For some reason Itunes pulled up most songs from 13 Rush albums that don't really involve the word life.
Love: 438
Hate: 42
You: 849
Sex: 27

And now my itunes decided that shuffle means shuffling just Rush songs. This is the fourth one in a row.

My love of Island Music has no bounds. Just wait until I kind find the Bob Marley cassette tapes!
Here's my entry for today:

My first copy of my favorite book. The cover is taped together and I have put color coded sticky notes that tell me where the books within the book, my favorite quotes, etc, are. Color coded.

Also I own three versions of this book including the British edition and there is a King Tutankhamen bookmark in this from when I saw the exhibit when it was in LA.

Before I get into the George Harrison charity tribute I went to last night, let's all give a huge fucking shout out to Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long blog for taking a creative whatever Emmy. Normally I don't give a shit about award shows but if anything deserves some props it's Dr. Horrible. Am I right?

Ok so [ profile] jenepherre [ profile] darksylvia [ profile] samiamagirl and I all decided to trek down to silverlake, battle potential hipsters all in the name of hanging out and seeing Ryan Ross realize his Beatles wet dream. Then when we got there we ended up seeing Jessa, Chanel, Tiffany,  and Chris. It was a Jennifer's Body/Northern Downpour reunion and it was so much fun. And we also got our hands stamped with Abraham Lincoln.  REPRESENT! What?

Let me just tell you that I was expecting generic skinny jeans with a v-neck hipsters with maybe some goofy hats thrown in with posturing, looking bored and talking loudly next to me about clove cigarettes and Rilo Kiley or whatever that band is, right? Boy. The hipsters really made an effort last night. That and there were people you could tell just really thought we were all still in the 1970s. It was an amazing time to be people watching. Luckily I had Sam there with me to people watch and laugh with me or I would have EXPLODED. There was Hipster Pancho Villa. I swear Sam and I were wondering where Tonto was.

Hipsta Pancho Villa )

I also really need to preface this part of the post with the fact that there were bands that played that were actually good and that we enjoyed, but they weren't ridiculous enough for me to glee face about with Sam and Jen and Leah and take pictures of to spam you with.

Next: Robin Gibbs/Bob Ross showed up to teach us how to disco and paint soothing trees on our walls. The band he was in was like a 70s orgy up on stage with Lynard Skynard, the bee gees and a number of other 70s rock band tropes.

The 70s called. They want their bell bottoms back.  )

Then the most ridiculously bad AMAZING thing happened. 12 fucking people walked on stage to do the most extravagant hipster interpretive mating dance and song performance EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There were two singers, one keyboardist, four guitar players, a drummer, a bassist, someone on the tambourine, someone flailing about "dancing" on the side of the stage and someone SITTING ON THE FLOOR PLAYING A TOY PIANO. OH MY GOD. IS THIS REAL LIFE???? YES IT WAS HOLY FUCKBALLS.

Then Ryan Ross and Alex Greenwald (that's his name, right?) and Michael Runion (name??) were up. I brought my old camera so the quality is a little whatever but seriously who cares, right?  Right.

Ryan Ross and Company )
[ profile] jenepherre was epic enough to capture Ryan's set on video.

Videos )

We were so excited about pancho villa that Sam and I decided to make our own venue where it's 10 dollars to get in if you have a pancho, 30 without and 5 if you have a pancho and an authentic sombrero.  Later we got bored and staged a screaming match involving llamas and shit.  It was AMAZING.  I  had so much fun hanging out with everyone.

Afterwards Sam and I went to 7-11 and almost went back to my car before we headed back again to say goodbye to Jenn and Chanel and Leah and we ended up geting introduced to Ryan Ross and talking to him and Z (?) about ice cream. Surreal!

And because I  am a totally asshole! Here are "Tweets" from us from last night. Because seriously you guys. This shit cannot be forgotten. It just can't.

Here is my proposal.

So first Doctor Who has to be real. Right? Then I need to steal the Tardis (OR Make The Doctor comply with my plan) and go back in time to when punk was actually good and real and bad ass. And not sold at hot topic. Still with me?

Ok. Then I'd go back in time and see the damned, the clash, the misfits (WITH DANZIG), joy division (OH MY GOD), the buzzcocks, the plasmatics, x, the descendents, the pogues, black flag, x-ray spex, bad brains etc. when they were out and about and also were the shit. Who's with me??

Come hop on board the SS Badassary with me you guys! We can also go back in time and punch Oliver Crowmwell in the cock.
